On behalf of one of my uhkt’s that has asked me in the email on how is the pregnant women or those who are breastfeeding their children in facing the obligatory of fasting during Ramadhan and I will shortly post the answer it here. Actually the discussions among the Syafie scholars was so length but inshaAllah i will only post the rajih opinions. Based on the few kitab’s of Mazhab As-Syafie’s such as, Mughni Muhtaj, Kifayatul Al-Akhyar, Tadkirah, Matan Abi Suja’ and other’s respected kutub’s as well.
In the kitab “Feqh As-Sunnah Lil-Nisa’” by Abu Malik Kamal Ibn As-Sayyid Salim has underlined:-Pregnant woman and breastfeed mother a given the rukhsah if they are afraid that it will cause any harm to theirselves or towards their children then, they didn’t have to fast but in addition, they have to feed on each day which they didn’t fast one poor people.
This is base on the Riwayah from Ahmad and Abdul ibn Hamdi in ” Muntakhib”.
Rasulullah s.a.w has said : ” Allah has uplift to the musafir half of the prayer(which mean qasr), and for those who musafir also, pregnant and breastfeed mother from fasting”..
Ibn Abbas r.a also has said….”( For those who are pregnant and breastfeeding their children when they are afraid ( which means they are afraid by they didn’t break their fast or by fasting will harm theirselves or their children) can break their fast and have to feed on every day one poor man.”) Abi Daud, Baihaqi.
Meanwhile also, Ibn Abbas has ordered his pregnant mother to break her fast during Ramadhan and said: ” You are in the honour position which are unable to fast then break your fast and feed for each day half of cubit measure of wheat”. Musnaf Abdul Razaq(7568) and DarulQotni. The Isnad is Sohih. .
Based on the previous hadith as well other hadiths as well the Syafie’s Scholars has make a conclusion that:- 1) If the women are afraid of theirselves then she has to Qoda’. 2) If she afraid of her children didn’t get enough milk or else then she has to Qodo’ as well as to pay fidyah.
To explain further, if they are afraid of themselves in Mughni Al-Muhtaj, Matan Abi Shuja’, Tadkirah and Kifayatul Akhyar in Juz 1 has indicated that she has to Qodo’ without fidyah but if she afraid to cause any harm to her children she breastfeed and the baby she carried on than she has to Qoda’ and pay fidyah as well in azhar (the most rajih opinions).
Furthermore there are also some reminder for Muslimah readers including myself that Muslim women as tough have some constrain to fulfill the obligation of fasting in Ramadhan but it was an order from Allah and we will inshAllah got reward by following it. Nevertheless, it wasn’t an excuses for women to not make the most in Ramadhan by zikrullah and selawat to the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) as much as possible. As all the mankind in this world never ever once forget the obligation in zikrullah.
In addition also, try to avoid talking to much or talking that did not get any good reward from Allah. They could be seen that in Ramadhan, when a Muslim women cannot fast and pray because of the ’syarie’ reasons they tend to forget that they are also in the Holy Month of Ramadhan and the could attain the fadilah of Ramadhan as well. They forgot to do zikrullah to do sadaqah to avoid the bad habits when they cannot fasting and praying. As if we want to know that there are some ‘ibadah’ which we can do according to the Quran, Sunnah Ijma’ and Qiyas.
![]()
According to one hadith in Bukhari which could be understand that Ummu Atiyyah has said that ” We have been ordered to go out during the “eid” until the virgin also has go out from her home, and the “huyyadh” also has went out and we are behind the peoples and we make takbir along with their takbir’s and we make ‘duah’ along with their ‘duah’s’ with a hope we will attain the barakah of the day and its purity.” Bukhari, Muslim and Daud.
Therefore, women can make zikrullah and takbirs as well. As not to forget the additional hadith in this topic, which is so popular that Rasulullah, s.a.w has said to Aishah r.a. and she is ‘haidhun’: (( Do whatever a Hajj could do ))
In sum, Muslim women has to take a note that we are not prohibited to do Zikrullah,Salawah, Istighfar, sadaqah and make a lot of duah’, do good deeds, avoid bad habits during Ramadhan when women are in the condition that could not do others deeds. InshAllah. BarakAllahulakunna. May we get close and know Allah better. As HE is the purpose of our lives. Every step, breath, the heartbeat are only because of HIM and for HIM. May we dropping out our tears because of Him and repent to Him fullheartedly. The feeling inshAllah was so beuatiful and cannot be describe by words.Wallhua’lam

There are some Arabic terms when i doing the researching about this topic that i have quote it here. I have read in kitab’s and therefore if there are some translations i made which are not correct or did not state as the exact meanings, any correction and addition is more than welcome.Thank You.
Breastfeeding is a must for children. Therefore, Islam to show it respect and honour towards women has give so many ” rukhshah” to them as a sign of acknowledgment of their rules and positons of wifes and mothers in Islam.
Haid: Menstruation
Huyyadh: Female when they are in their menstruation
*Pictures are from Flickr.com, Islamionline.net and some other websitesMay Allah accept our ibadah and fasting and put it in the best position of So’miun As-Siddiqiyyun.Amin

Assalamualaikum ukht..
Wallahu A’lam

Afwan Kathira. Baru dapat follow-up comment di sini.Tiada kesempatan. Moreover, we tried to train ourselves to forget other things other than ibadah inshAllah in this Ramadahan..Spiritual Upliftment. MasyAllah. How we love Ramadhan. The spirit of Ramadhan inshAllah will continously kept burning in our soul and reflected by our ibadah in the journey to knowing the meaning of IHSAN. InshAllah please together we make this Ramadhan something different from our previous Ramadhan. As Syaikh Hussain Abdul Sattar asserted in his lecture that we have to make this Ramadhan as a way to cure our disease during in the past 11 month. Such as a person who has cancer and have to do a cimotheraphy treatment they didn’t want to do other thing and wouldnt be disturb by other things. This is the right attituede of a real mu’min in facing Ramadhan.
We have really have to detattach from the world, not that we didn’t make a way to it, buat the things that we didn’t have to know. to read. to look. just take a rest somehow in this Ramadhan..Time to cure to our spiritual need and disease. Indeed, he said that we have to lock ourselves ( i’tikaf ) for example, and then just detattach ourselves from our hp, laptop and other ‘foolish’ things that keep disturbing our ibadah, he said. Indeed, very hard to impliment right? At least, we have to try very hard when surfing internet just to surf inshAllah the site that will benefit our iman and amal. To make it better don’t make it into our heart. InshAllah.

Aljoofre and Tawel: JazakAllahu Khairan Kathira ya Ust Aljoofre and bro Tawel.Ust Aljoofre has elobrate a crucial ’syarah’ and bro tawel has added an addtional infromation to us.
Indeed, it was understandable that 1 Mud (secupak) is half or what we usually understood as half of “So’a” or gantang. But we me and my friends has mean that it was half but the exact and the correct meaning by the Syafieah’s Scholars as Aljoofre and Bro Tawel has added. Jazakumullah for that.
As in the kitab ” Hasyiah Ibrahim Al-Barzani” asserted that One Mud is equally with One Quarter of ” So’a”. This is the syarah by our Ulama’s As-Syafieah. Which means as Ust AlJoofre said that it was 1/4= quarter of Mud.(Satu gantang= 4 Cupak)
BrakAllahulakuma. Thanks a lot.

As for me, Alhamdulillah I have given got the oppurtunity by Allah before I went to Egypt in one modern pondok’s in Malaysia and tafaqquh and talaqqi a little bit during my four years in Egypt. But Alhamdulillah somehow my closed freind from US, her husband was a student of Syeikh Ali Jum’ah. He has teaching by talaqqi for about 17 years. Yesterday, i just got the chance to went to their house. InshALlah, if their are some other student who want to learn with him mybe inshAllah he will consider it. As for now, he is taeching Feqh Syafie for those who are working - without spesific kutub’s, but allrounder kutub’s. For Ramadhan he is teaching History of Andalus.

Ummu Muhammad:BarakAllahufik ukht..takpe kena qoda’ pun pahalanya melimpah ruah sebab pahala besar menjadi ibu. Yelah tu..di dalam hampir kesemua kitab matan Syafieah termasuk Kifayatul Akhyar menyebut satu mud=1/4 gantang. 1 gantang=2.75 kg(dibahagikan 4 dapatlah secupak). Atau lebih mudah mcm yg bro tawel beritahu dinaqalkan dr Syeikh Nuh Mim Keller satu Mud, 508.1999.
Sambil mengambil pahala Ramadhan, bolehlah bersedekah kepada faqer miskin.

For those whom their heart and soulare yearning for Allah’s love and thrist for Allah pleasure, we have reached the 11 of Ramadhan. MasyAllah how the time running so fastly and every second and day Ramadhan past away, it’s was so painfully wrenching our heart because how we loved Ramadhan and din’t want even for second to separate with it.
O Allah, how many praise can’t compare with your love and bless. Please don’t forget and leave us. We can’t bear even for a second to live without you Ya Allah.
This Ramadhan had to be the time we dissappered for the world. We want to be ‘ spiritually angel’ after the end of Ramadan. This is also what Syaikh Hussain Abdul Sattar had indicated in his lesson. That means, please tell our friend that we can’t be contect except in the Masjid. We didn’t hang out with them anymore, we didn’t attend iftor here and there. We didn’t go shopping here and there. We didn’t have time for that. This is the tima 100% for Allah. If we open the internet please do it to hear the Quran, Zikrullah, lessons online from Masyeikh2 to enhance our love to Allah.
It is not that we did’nt care about them anymore it’s only Syeikh said that for a cancer patient who are doing the cimo treatment it was something weird to attend any other than only the cimo treatment. We have only 30 days and how the 30 days will running so fastly and how the 30 days was a very special gift by Allah and HE know better that if we make full of the days in Ramadhan we can benefit it to cure our soul disease and make ourselves a better persons and servants of Allah.
This is the treatment time for those soul whose are really yearning for Allah’s love, magfirah and Rahmah.
Allhuakbar!
Syukhran ya Rabb ala kulli nikmah. Ma munkin an ubayyinu bilkalam ma qimatun hadhi Rahmah.Allahuakbar…
Please don’t forget also to pray for our brothers at Palestine. They really need our du’ah. Please ya Allah make Fatah unite with Hamas.Amin

Memang bestnya k.ma..Seronok dan bahagia kan dpt mendengar kalam dr ulama’ ulama yang ikhlas dan benar2 mengikut jalan yg benar. Bukan sekdar melihat sesuatu dr sudut zahir sahaja.
Moga2 kita berkesempatan ke Dar Az-Zahra’, Untuk akhwat. Utk yang brothers di Dar Mustafa.
Oh ye k.ma dah pencen kejap ye.Mg2 dimudahkan.Doakan utk thesis sy dan exam sy. Saya memang tak sabar tunggu k.ma siap thesis, inshAllah bakal bawa banyak manfaat buat Ummah thesis k.ma, menjadi khazanah berharga dr Tullab an-nur.Maannajah.:)

Btw: Ramadhan have reached it 15 days. How the times have past so fastly. May we take preview on ourselves for the past 15 days. Have we become a better servants, person and more close to Allah?
Only Allah know know how we love Ramadhan and really want to stop the time to make only Ramadhan in our lives. All the creatures was happy and make zikr in every second of their lives. May we the best creotor of Allah didn’t forget our purpose of life as a ‘ibadu Ar-Rahman’.
In Malaysia, the celebration of Eid was too early and haven’t been state as in the Islamic principle have underlined it, it was somehow kind of demolished the spirit of ‘ibadah’ among some people and make people too eager too celebrate a celebration that aren’t sure we have passed it or are we qualified too celebrate it?
“Al-Adah Muhakkmah” Yes, but in this case?
Additional:For Ramadhan issues in Malay that keep up bringing by the society could be view breifly in these sites:
Champ
Bahrussofa
Annaqshy
For Ramadhan issues in English will be available in so many sites I also have included the links under my previous psot in the comments, but as just to reassure it for the second times.

Thanks so ALLAH you wrote in English otherwise I’d have missed this GREAT post!! Thanks so much for explaining all that nai .. you’re SUPER!!
In my own opinion - and as being a mom of two (grown up) boys - I definitely WOULD breastfeed and NOT fast during Ramadan. I think the moment there’s a life growing inside the womb of a woman, she has highest responsibility to nurture it and give it the BEST POSSIBLE care! Allah is PRO-life .. so in MY opinion this is the ONLY right thing to do. What I find a very nice way to “compensate” though for non-fasting is the idea to feed te hungry, homeless and underpriviledged! They exist in EVERY society and need every help they can get and with the gap rich-poor widening instead of narrowing, it is even MORE necessary!
Thanks SO MUCH for this GREAT post nai … I’ll be coming MUCH more often from now on!
Comment by Karin — October 9, 2006 @ 10:12 am
Dear Karin,
May Allah bless you. I’m so very glad to see you here.;) Thanks for popping and dropping a comment. Indeed, yes Allah has given a lot of rukhsah to us as a Muslims in fullfill our obligatary during the hardness that has been qualified by the syarie’s. Because the basic thing in Islam is to achieve the maslahah ( beneficial matter) and to avoid harmness or fasad.
Ohh, you have two chlid of you. Alhamdulillah. Not that I was super ( i’m not a superwoman you know dear:). Perhaps i’m just a very ordinary person- a very weak and sinfull servants of ALLAH and this affairs is my specilization in studies(usul al-feqh) still have a lot to add to but I’m so glad we could share something together.
Yes, in those books indicates that even if the mother was not a real mother but an adopted mother, or a women that we pay her to breastfeeding our child also included in this case. Meaning that Islam encourage so much for a mother to breastfeed her child. Even during Ramadhan if we afraid that when we are fasting we could not provide enough milk for our children then Allah with HIS Bless and Mercy gave us an exception but in turn we have to pay fidyah by doing sadaqah and pay back our fasting by refasting after Ramadhan. The story we know in pre-Islamic moment when out Propeht (pbuh) has been sent to her breastfeed mother Halimah Saadi’yah showed us that how Islam really take an account the importance of breastfeed a child
Breastfeed is a MUST for a mother to her child nevertheless we know the benefit of it. In Islam or particulallry the Shafie’s the encouraged year to breastfeed is until 2 years. I’m not a mother and wife myself but seeing my mother breastfeed her children (they are 8 of us:) really make me realize the importance of it. My youngest sister still breastfeeding she is 1 and 7 month now. But mybe because she’s the eighth then my mother is fasting.
My lovely Karin, how old your children now? I bet they are surely very active. kindhearted and intelligent like their mother. I will inshAllah try to write more( little by little) in English eventough I’m not so good in it and perhaps after 3 month I will continue writing here because I have to settle a few things outside. Please pray for me the weak and poor servant of Allah , ok. I really need that. Thanks so much dear.:)
